List of priority topics for UCEED last few days preparation

List of topics to prepare and to skip (2021 update)

Part B

  1. Avoid spending hours for sketching of one particular question.
  2. Do quick scribbling of line sketching and do as many situation based exercises as possible, like at least four situations in just one hour!
  3. Don’t spend more than two hours per day if you have the whole day for your preparation.

Part A

  1. Skip current affairs and GK
  2. Skip Materials and Manufacturing process study
  3. If you have started your preparation recently - skip design awareness (like culture, designers, painters etc. - from here on let’s term this as GA)
  4. If you have been preparing for a while, esp. the image based and non verbal part and haven’t touched GA part then quickly revise the following GA topics
    • Painting, state wise painting, art and all.
    • Quickly go through colour theory
    • Famous designers,
    • Quickly about photography
    • Based on leftover time, plan to cover any other GA topics that you felt imp.
    • Revise and practice some samples of nonverbal and image involved aptitude questions, including ability questions
    • Practice at least one previous paper with a time limit. It’s fine to cross check the answers but never ever try to estimate the score or check if that score is sufficient or not! Remember, whether you prepare or not your positive attitude and confidence are very important and if you keep comparing scores you might loose your confidence....for no reason. So be smart!
  5. If you are not ready with non verbal too (just started), then do the following
    • Skip current affairs
    • Skip entire GA including about designers, materials etc. No need to touch any and it’s absolutely ok, especially if you feel you can pick up some score from the below preparation
    • Practice wholly (apart from the sketching) on
      • Abstract tests
      • Solids and their manipulation (folding, unfolding, different views, counting no. of surfaces etc.)
      • General, mechanical and spatial ability
      • Deductive reasoning
      • Odd man out series
      • Revise basic math formulas (check the formulas in this video and they are more than sufficient)
      • Skip signs, symbols etc,
      • Skip paragraph comprehension (just face them during exam)
      • Base on time availability you may plan to cover the utmost imp GA topics as listed above
  6. Again, Practice at least one previous paper with a time limit. It’s fine to cross check the answers but never ever try to estimate the score or check if that score is sufficient or not! Remember, whether you prepare or not your positive attitude and confidence are very important and if you keep comparing scores you might loose your confidence....for no reason. So be smart!

That’s it...

All the best,
Your bro,
Bhanu.

Guide about Font

I'm getting many comments and requests about Font, I therefore updated this page with very good number of links which will help you with font guide. But as per my knowledge, it's not necessary to go in depth about Fonts coz it's time taking and of course not many questions can be expected from this topic. Anyway briefing or over viewing on the top fonts in design point of view is good for safer side. So, I would recommend you to spare time accordingly.

Although it's purely observative, I can say that Fonts can be categorized into several groups. Once you know them and if you are capable of finding the difference such as
  1. width of each alphabet
  2. Height
  3. Extensions/tooth
  4. Curving/plain/bends ........etc

it would be very easy to identify difference in fonts. But if the question is like which "Font TYPE" it is, then there's no other way other than remembering them!

New update - Structured and listed resource collection for UCEED

UCEED is basically an undergraduate design entrance exam (for B.Des). You may find it difficult to find materials directly in the form of books. I, therefore, gathered relevant materials in this post for your benefit. Many of the materials are available as downloadable PDF files.

Download PDF - complete UCEED links in SYL blog

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mathematical Geometry

UCEED questions seem to center mostly around mathematical aptitude; especially geometry type questions; which judge your observation, imagination, problem solving, lateral thinking and of course creativity. Keeping this in mind, I have gathered some useful materials related to basic geometry. I strongly believe that aspirants should have good knowledge about geometry solid transformations and manipulations. This subject area will directly improve your (above said) skills (observation, imagination and lateral thinking). So, that's why I would like you to start your UCEED practice by getting good grip on this area.

    2. Animation movement

Basically, this section deals with step-by-step image movements; which when put whole-together, will help to create videos or animations. This type of questions needs your careful observation of the preceding and succeeding steps. For each of the example given in the link post  (below) observe the pattern and movement of hands, legs and other parts of the given image (human, animal etc)

Check the detail in downloadable (Pdf) form Tips for analyzing the pattern and graphic movements >>

    3. Working with Geometric Objects

Like I mentioned earlier, Solving Geometric object type of questions improves your imagination as well as visualization skills; thus UCEED examiners usually included object type of questions. I therefore worked with some examples and included a step-by-step process for solving such type of questions.

    5. Tessellations

Generally called as unfolded views, Tessellation is all about unwrapping a solid on a flat surface and drawing the unfolded view on a paper. I also gave easy way of solving tetrahedron tessellation problem in one of my pages. check below links

    7. Evolution of objects

Evolution generally means product cycle from past to present. So, you are generally required to observe and identify the everyday use items (say TV) from old to new generation.

    Abstract Tests

Abstract, mathematical and mechanical aptitude type of questions didn't appeared in CEED exams, but those ARE REQUIRED for you ! This type of reasoning and logical questions seems to be a part of UCEED syllabus; and the sample model test that IIT B released recently proved this. I therefore, included abstract test exercises in this resources page for obvious reason. Abstract reasoning tests helps you with pattern findings and also for problem solving.

For now, I've managed to gather some questions that would help you by giving idea of what it looks like and how to deal with those questions. Later, if time permits, I will try to give my reasoning, and some idea on how to solve such questions. (These tests were taken from pscychometric-success.com)

General, Mechanical and Verbal Reasoning questions

A 200+ page collection of very good Mechanical ability questions PDF

Most of the sample test papers (PDF files) that I've included here (below) has been taken from Job Test Prep website. Big thanks to the web owner for including free PDF files!

    General Design Awareness study topics

I have covered a lot of topics related to CEED Part - A exam in my earlier posts for CEED students.  The topics are basically related to several design field awareness, their past, present and future. Fortunately, most of those topics can be directly helpful for UCEED aspirants also. Thankfully; that reduced my burden :)

I therefore have included those selected topics and skipped some topics that might not be useful. Hope this will be helpful for your preparation.

    Self-Evaluation test

Before going through further materials as part of UCEED preparation. Let's see this. Assuming that you have over-viewed the above resources (topics related to geometry and pictorial questions), I would like you to check your understanding of the concept by solving one simple question. In this regard, I have included the link for your practice and self-evaluation.
