Depth of field (DOF) can be described in two ways. Shallow and Deep DOF. Shallow is when the included focus range is very narrow. Deep is when the included range is large. f-stops work a inverse values, such that a small f/number (say f/2.8) corresponds to a larger or wider aperture value, which results in a shallow depth of field. A large f/number (say f/16) results in a smaller or narrower aperture size and therefore a deeper depth of field.

The following two pictures will clear the concept.

Ashoka pillar bear the images of an elephant, a galloping horse, a bull, and a lion. All these animals are separated by overriding wheels of chariot over a bell-shaped lotus. The pillar is carved out of a single block of polished sandstone (monolithic architecture).

These animals symbolize the four different phases of Gautama Buddha’s life. The Elephant stands for the Buddha's notion in reference to the dream of Queen Maya, a white elephant entering her tomb. The Bull points out the birth of Buddha which happened during the full moon in the month of Vesak under the zodiacal sign Taurus. The Horse denotes the horse Kanthaka, which Buddha used for going away from palatial life. The Lion shows the attainment of enlightenment, the Buddhahood.

Let us just consider two circles (numbered 1 and 2) touching the center disc C. As you can see from the figure, the two circles makes an angle 60 degree with the center. Since, the lines joining the centers are of same length (twice the radius), the lines form an equilateral triangle (check the picture). So, the total degrees (360) with that made with the combination of two adjacent circles (60 degrees) to get 6 as the answer.

First thing first, there won't be any center line for the front view if you had carefully observed the plan section. The width between the two consecutive gear tooth goes on decreasing from center to either side. For further clarification, just count the number of gear tooth on the plan view and equate that to that available in the front view (take twice by considering the bottom also)

The bigger ball tends to push the medium ball towards the direction of motion and the medium in turn tries to drag the smaller ball. In the picture, it can be seen that the bigger ball is always to the left of the remaining balls and hence obviously, the balls are moving from right to left.

34) B
The first picture (left one) of the question depicts that the right leg of the image (the leg that is in front to us) is in front and straight position, likewise the left leg (that is on the other side of the person) is straight and is back. So, the person is about to take a step with his right leg. Also note the position of hands. The second image is quite opposite to the first image. Now the middle picture should be in transition between the two posters (legs and hands). The right leg should be in bent position and in fact it should be in middle, touching the ground and the left leg should be in air (he just took step) and probably in bent position. So, position in B option suits.

  1. Hi Sunder, First of all a hearty thanks for these great stuff and rich resources.
Here in the answer key for 2014 CEED Question paper you might misinterpret them and so answers you published are wrong.

Question 17 - A Platonic solid with 12 sides is called a " CUBE " , question is about sides not faces.

Quesion 21 - There are 17 surfaces depicted by me. Please analyse again,
    See,
    Front - 3
    Back - 3
    Right - 4
    Left - 2
    Top - 3
    Bottom - 2
    Total are 17 not 16.

    Please update these.

    1. Hello Anunay,

Good to see your answers, I would always like to get such suggestions :)

But, the fact is what I have given is right !
Edges in 2D are called as 'sides' and in 3D 'surfaces' are called 'sides' ! check this - Definition of sides in Math is fun website

And please do check yourself for the 21 question. The no. of bottom faces is always 1. So, the answer is 16 and not 17. flat faces are always considered as 1. You may check my explanation in the link that I gave above (in Q 21) for more knowledge.

Thank you for the comment :)

    2. agree with you, i too couldn't understand where the 2nd surface comes at bottom (as by Anunay). it should be 1 surface in bottom.

  2. Hi Bhanu,
Thanks for doing such a great job.
I think the answer to Q46 is option B
All other options are linked to each other in a way that rotating any of them in their plane will get you the other options while option B will need to be flipped to get there.

  4. Mr B. I think that the answer for Q-35 is C because the boat is either climbing a wave or it is being lifted up by a wave either way the boat is rising so both the flag and the sailors scarf should point down. What is you opinion about it. I am expecting a reply. Thank you.

    1. thing is wind flows from left to right, in order for the boat to be pushed in the direction of travel (which can be identified by the way the girl is sitting, she obviously has to face the moving direction) and when the wind is pushing the boat, the v shaped flag post appears little forward, while the free (unaffected things by the force wind) like the scarf, flag etc moves in opposite direction! In option C, the so called V shaped flag post is shaped like inverted V without any indication of push by air. don't u agree ?
and btw that was a unique mention 'Mr.B' !

  6. Hey Bhanu,
Answer to Q. 46 should be option B, cause when we rotate A, C, and D in clockwise direction figures overlap. While B is anti-clockwise.

    1. consider A, inside the big outer arc, the small arc is acting as a tail to the medium sized arc (which is again inside the big outer arc), and it is to the left bottom to it, meaning, If you rotate the whole pattern, the medium arc will assume to move first followed by (as a tail) by small arc. Likewise, in options C and D, this can be observed, only in option B, if we rotate clockwise, small arc assumes to move first followed by medium sized arc!

  13. Hai Bhanu Chander, your posts are so helpful for any person who wants to be a designer. Thank you for putting in so much effort to set up this blog and help students everywhere.

I've got a question for you. I have been noticing a lot of poster and product design questions asked for CEED. Is there a detailed format to give illustrations of a product or a poster? For people like me without an academical design background, skecthes and drawing will be an unprofessional one. Is that okay?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi, here is a sample product design that u can refer to.
      http://stuffyoulook.blogspot.com/2013/10/walking-stick-design-problem-solving.html
There is no format as such. Your attempt depends on the questionthe product you are designing. Some product needs multiple views, some needs exploded views, while some need just a basic 2D sketch. These all are mostly dependent on whether ur sketch is able to communicate ur idea or not. Designer needs to be optimised in the sense that they should think how short or simple (less no of views or parts) they can make so that the viewer can easily understand his idea. That’s it, do format nothing. Academic background is not at all needed. I hail from engineering background yet I’m replying to design ques. Isn’t that sufficient to prove? All u need is design interest. Here is,y tips on poster making.

    1. It's B. consider the small arc as the tail and see in which direction the tail is relative to the other arc. Other than in option B, the tails are following in clockwise direction.
