CEED Part B Design Practice Questions - as per new pattern


As part of the new Part B pattern from 2020, I've listed some practice questions below so that you can make use of this as your practice to design exams. I'm trying to make you self dependent for your preparation. This I do by giving you a hint on how we can come up with exercise or practice questions on our own - by considering the everyday observed or the ones known to us - like the characters, products etc. considered in the below sample questions. I hope you will be able to start developing your own questions. All the best....

Part B practice questions - 2 (for CEED and UCEED)



1. Sketching of Characters (Similar to Q1 in CEED 2020)

Given the characters below. Draw the described situations by maintaining the same character. No need to draw the background.

1. Popeye character - he is swallowing spinach from a tin and is feeling energized with his biceps boosted. Show him in standing posture with one leg on top of a stone of height equal to a feet


2. Character 2 - The cat is seated on an elevated platform with a sad face as it was hungry. 


3. Character 3 - The treacherous cat is now crying with pain as a big stone fell on his left leg. Show the cat holding his leg up with his two hands and also show the painful emotion of the cat.

4. Character 4 - Donald duck is lying on his bed and is yawing as if just waken up from his sleep. 


5. Character 5 - The bear is happy as his mouth is filled with fish, held with his two hands while being seated on top of a small chair


6. Character 6 - Draw the boy walking on the road carrying a school bag, holding the bag's two arms while he was about to kick a tin/can (say coke can) lying on the ground. He was not happy as his teacher had scolded him for not doing the homework. Show his expression. 


7. Character 7 - Draw Mickey mouse playing guitar in a standing position while he was deeply immersed (as if in a different world) in singing a song


8. Character 8 - Draw the character as if he was in love mode while he was seated on top of a wooden box     


2. Making Patterns out of visual elements (Similar to Q2 in CEED 2020)

Using the visual elements given below, create at least three recognizable objects/elements (for all the seven images below) and give a title to each. Use only BLACK pencil/pen. Draw only within the boundaries of the boxes.







3. Problem Identification Exercises (similar to Q5 in CEED 2020)

Identify the 5 important problems that you, as a user, face when using the products/items listed below. Do the following for each problem 

  • Illustrate and annotate the identified problems separately
  • Describe each problem in one sentence
  • Propose your solutions (sketching the solutions are optional) with one or two lines of how the proposals solve the issues

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Your problem identification and observation
  • Ability to express the problems and the solutions through sketches 
  • The practicality of identified problems and solutions

For your understanding, I've given the respective images for the listed situations below after the tips

Some tips to note:
(I've considered Q5 of CEED 2020 as the case study to explain the below points) 
  • Given the product image, identify the problems, and speak only about the problems associated with that particular given product. Don't generalize or assume similar but slightly or highly different products. I strongly believe that it will be a mistake if you identify problems or propose solutions for a generalized product rather than for the given specific object.  
  • Given the form of the object/product (for ex. the outer shape of the toothbrush) and also it is obvious that other things are not mentioned (like for example the hardness of the bristles, the material of the brush, or the material of the bristles) don't state problems related to these unmentioned features. Like if you say that the brush bristles bend after using for some time, I might not appreciate that if I were to be an examiner (I might be wrong but this is how I think). I would suggest not to go for longterm effects of the product components, as the specifics like material were not given. Try to utilize only the information available, like the form, shape/size, aesthetics, ergonomics, obvious looking material (like for ex. it is obvious to identify wood, plastic, etc.) and so on - to state the problems. It is better to get lesser marks stating obvious or common problems than trying to identify crucial problems by making some assumptions on the unavailable data.
(Remember: If there are no seemingly possible problems, then CREATE the opportunities by identifying the least probable (as it appears) happening problems by using the products/items. The problems that we never thought are problems, or, the ones most ignored (by taking them as granted) by the users, including you!)

As you can see above that we can create our own practice questions out of everyday used things/appliances. Give it a try and come up with questions.....coz.....it's an art!

Additional exercises to improve your problem identification skills
 
Identify the problems of using the following products (no need to sketch) and list your alternate solutions 
  1. TV remote
  2. Immersion water heater
  3. iPad
  4. Desktop PC
  5. Hairdryer
  6. Broom
  7. Writing plastic pad
  8. Nail cutter

4. Visual Synthesis 

Create 2D graphic icon signs for all the situations listed below with either pencil or pen. The graphic icon was supposed to be installed as a signboard at appropriate locations.

(This exercise will help to attempt similar visual communications questions. Try to attempt these very quickly.)

Evaluation criteria

  • Consistency of design language followed 
  • Ability to convey the written item as a graphic
  • The neatness of the icons drawn

5. Visual Branding (Visual communication)

Create visual brand logos for the following:

  1. Eyewear shop, name 'mywear'
  2. A Bar and Restaurant, name 'Melon'
  3. A boutique shop, name 'botik'
  4. A flower shop, name 'pugal'
  5. A trade mark meat brand, name 'murug'
  6. A new design for Reebok shoe brand
  7. A camera accessory shop, name 'focus' 
  8. A new mobile brand 'Caret'
  9. A new supermarket brand 'Whole mart'
  10. A currency exchange dealer, name 'Xchange'


As it must be clear to you how that it is quite easy to create practice questions out of our everyday activities or the ones that we have seen earlier. Try this by yourself.   1. Sir they are really helpful, but i have a question. Previous year i gave exam but couldn't able to score good marks is part B. How can i know wither the answer that i am giving are correct or not. Like is there any way so that i can share my works with you and you can rectify it.

  2. Are the questions going to be only of certain type in creativity, visual sensitivity etc (like icon making, object making) or they can vary as well?

  3. Hello Sir, Thank you for the preparation tips. I had a query, unlike DAT, this time too we need not prepare discipline specific questions for CEED exam. We will be evaluate in our discipline only at the time of interview?

    1. There is no specific pattern or kind of shortcut for this type of question coz this isn’t purely based on our imagination, what object we see out of the given set of lines. I’ve solved the CEED 2020 question in this blog and Ive given some tips. Just make use of the lines and imagine of what you can derive ....objects, things.....the ones that you mostly see around you, at home, work, college etc

  5. hi sir, I'm giving CEED2021, i am very weak at part a of the paper, how much ever i practice i don't seem to do too well.. how much is the minimum required to get through in part a?

    1. There is no specific min narks that is suited for every year. It varies. What you can do is make a list of the most asked questions every year, non verbal etc, and skip those that seem to take time. You don’t have to cover all topics. With specific topics but well prepared way, u can still get good score...start from today itself

  6. Sir,there was a question i read somewhere......that you have a cricket bat,a tyre,a plastic bottle,a bucket. Using all this items,imagine a 3 intresting ideas/products. You can use a one item multiple times. Please tell me how to tackle with such questions.

  7. Hello sir,
    I have a doubt.
    I have not clicked save and submit for Part B ans in CEED exam. Part A I have done that. will they take for evaluation my part B if I eligible from Part A. Because of timeout I couldn't click on save and submit.

    1. According to what I heard from the previous years students, some of such incidents got considered while for some the evaluation was not done. Just stay hopeful. Meanwhile you can prepare for portfolio and also have backups exams, institutes to be ona safer side.

Sir can you please solve the 2021 and 2022 papers also and publish and also please refresh the syallabus like the theory part is becoming less update the syallabus and how to practice according to new pattern and add new questions please . please provide us a new time table also. Really it will be very helpful for us .

      I last motivation when I'm seeing the solutions and also the resources being used by the coaching institutes to their fullest to make their money. So, i didn't plan to solve them. But I will try to make up my mind and if done I will share through blog.
