I believe you can always do that extra part. In fact, if you have this skill, then you will have an upper hand! But if you are into engineering, then I believe its almost rare that you will get a chance to play with designing for aesthetics or ergonomics. Again, this is subjective to the type of industry you will get into but mostly difficult. The biggest advantage is the imagination and views that one can obtain during mech course. But, make sure that the subjects under meh is interesting to u.
