Q1)
"What is the cutoff for UCEED ? (or any other design exam)
UCEED or any other design exam for that matter does not maintain a fixed or standard cut off every year. Exam cut off varies every year based on the following factors
- Number of students appearing
- Exam difficulty level
- Maximum marks scored by the first ranker (and subsequent top 100/any other numbered people)
- Density or number of people having same marks or score
- Average marks obtained
- Number of students having marks within a given range etc
So, it's not that easy to tell - for a given marks, whether that is accepted or within a range. Just based on marks, we cannot predict AIR or cutoff. Some times, for lower marks also, there is a chances oif getting good AIR (if exam was difficult and average of all the people's attempt were low) and vice versa. So, just don't get confused but wait till the results or score list!

Again, institute cutoff's varies every year based on the above discussions. If there is a post UCEED process just like CEED, NID-DAT and other design exams, then it's not necessary that institutes take only the toppers! they will also give weight-age to any/some or all of the following - merit, performance in interview, studio tests, portfolio etc and more. So again, discussion for Q1 is applicable and must be justifying here.

ReplyDeleteMy uceed score is 42 and rank is 703. My question is that why are they allowing so many people to qualify for so few seats? There're 30 each in iitb and iiitdm and I don't know how many for guwahati but why so many people?
Score is usually not the final decision maker in deciding whether seat can be allotted or not. Thta's why usually in CEED/NID exams second and third rounds are there. So, there could be case where even first ranker can or cannot get seat! Also, being qualified with UCEED score allows one to go for private institutes too, I think that's why they do so.

AIR will tell us about getting or not getting, I think cutoff is for IITB only, score card is the official statement of what you recieved today, nothing special.

Kashish Bansal, you are sure to get IIT jabalpur but your chances for IITB are almost no because of reservation, the gen. category gets only 14 seats. But if you want you can apply to UPES also. And please mention your score so we all can know.

ReplyDeleteI think the cutoff that they mentioned is for only two IIT's - ITB and IIITDM, of course IITDM might reduce their cut off. So, whether you got good AIR or not, look better go through all the institutes offering admissions through UCEED score, check their individual cut off requirements and do apply accordingly. Don't leave a single chance !

I only wish i could have found this resource sooner and studied more. I got 42 marks in UCEED and my AIR is 708 and i am in SC quota. Can i expect a seat in any IIT? (how many are there btw? Bombay, guwahati and jabalpur only?)

ReplyDeleteFor GEN category, those who got below AIR 50 has good chances of getting into any one of three institutes IITB, IITG and IIITDM Jabalpur but those having above AIR 50 might have less chances. They can probably look for other institutes. As of know, UPES institute is the only institute that I know which accepts UCEED score. I will look for more institutes accepting UCEED score when I get time. Till then try from your end!

I was even planning an article on UCEED. I made an analysis based on applicants posts here too, to get an idea what is the value of 1 mark in UCEED (you loose about 8-10 places between 50 and 80 and logrithmically more if you score lesser.

ReplyDeleteUPES is definitely good, but if u get any IIT, then, I suppose that should be in your priority list, else go for UPES.

ReplyDeleteFor entry to BDes through UCEED, the answer is NO. You don't need to be good at drawing. During BDes, students would be introduced to different facets of drawing. So, obviously, students will be developing their drawing skills. But, a priori interest and minimal drawing knowledge is recommended to become a successful designer!

DeleteIn my opinion, if you are planning for mdes after bdes, then go for IIIT Jabalpur, but if have plans to do job right after your bdes and if you've clear cut idea of which stream most suits you (or that is interesting to u), then may be you can opt Symbiosis. Reason is obvious, bdes in IIITDM is a general design course which covers/introduces to at least three-four streams. So, you will be having a brief picture of what happens in those streams so that during ur bdes journey, you might be able to find the design stream that entertains u the most. Bdes in Symbiosis is design specific (as per my knowledge) and u will be focused towards that specific stream which is best when u already have clear idea of where u r standing and u want to pursive job after ur course. I can say IIITDM is also good in career persoective and not that people usually prefer that when it comes a decision between IIIT and Symb. So, you better decide which way you want to take. Want to do mdes? go ahead with IITDM!
This is just my view - I believe it works.

Gud to hear that. It's not enough, try to go thru similar ques either from books or from internet. Also, ensure that u understood all the concepts and realize the variety of ques that could possible be asked in the exam. UCEED syllabus is not fix - u know right ? so, u need to keep updating yourself with more knowledge esp on design GA.
DeleteI wonder whether u can answer all the GA questions by now ? I'm not sure about you but I can say that not everybody can answer all GA questions coz of the depth and wide syllabus. So, make sure that u r ready with them.

Deletebut yes, drawing matters during BDes. After all, it's a design course right. One should at least be in a position to communicate their designs preferably in the mode of sketches although digital works are emerging these days. It's quite easy to put ur ideas in paper in certain cases than using computers/tabs.

Usually most people do self study as UCEED topics are diverse. In one way if u r not able to figure out the required topics to be prepared or if u r not used to do self study, then may be u can consider looking for some instructor or coaching center. But if u can understand UCEED process - I mean if u are able to list out the necessary topics to be prepared as wel las able to plan for prep. then u r good enough to go for self study. Again, joining coaching center depends on availability of good coaching centers in ur locality. Pl chk all these factors and decide urself whether u can join r not. gud luk
DeleteSir I solved 2015 and 2016 paper of UCEED respectively and got 248 and 136 respectively. Is this type of marks enough for getting in IIT-B. Sorry I don't know the cut off of previous year papers....

I personally don't wish to hear this ques, since as our concern shld only be on practicing to 100% rather than just sticking to cutoff's. What if I say that 100 marks is the cutoff, will u stop practicing ? so, just oractice n improve with time

And actually there is a coaching class here known as Arkin ,also i solved the uceed 2016 question paper i got 131.4 marks i took me about 2:30 hrs in my 1st attempt and if there is no need for class can u tell me how to prepere for the 1st section in uceed? thank u'

ReplyDeleteNot that mmuch. Given the amount of questions in that, it's not good to go through the entire book. May be you can choose the topics and prepare, but I think online aptitude websites are good.

ReplyDeleteu can chk any materials, previous papers, sample/mock papers related to CEED Part A, as well as NID - DAT. Pattern kind of questions and mtl. r already available in uceed resource page under spatial/mental ability - I don't remember exactly, just chk all the ability test.

ReplyDeleteYeah, Quantitative are helpful for exams, but it's not the usual Quantitative way, I mean as available in say RS Agarwal books, that much is not req, selective study related to thinking/aptitude would be sufficient, I've already listed some in NID new resources appear n will update in the next resource update if any.

ReplyDeleteThe topics that I've listed in uceed page are less compared to what uceed covers. You cannot expect so called 'imp. ques/topics' just like u do during board exam. This is not of that kind!

DeleteNow that you have solved them, you must be knowing abt which ques/topics you did mistake. For all the previous papers that u solved, chk the common topic/area that u couldn't solve the most. Like this make a quick list - with the top most topic being the most mistaken area/topic. Plan to spend time for them accordingly and start working on that. This exercise shld help u cover all aspects of ur design exam.
While, previous papers help, they are not complete and we need to go thru as many topics/ques as possible. Also, the topics (resources) that I shared in this blog is solely based on my analysis of prev papers and the syllabus that they gave. It's not complete in one sense. So, analyze yourself for the topics that could possibly be asked in exam and prepare for that too. With some time gaps, try to re-solve the prev papers again quickly, and chk whether u were comfortable with the previously mistaken ques.

ReplyDeleteyeah, ceed part A is similar to uceed, u can go thru them without any doubt. Solving prev papers r not all sufficient as part of prep, u need to go thru many resources and topics.

Sir i have so many previous year ceed papers from 2009-2016 in starting years paper like from 2009 till 2014 they not mentioned part-A section in the paper instead in the question paper they have given titles like

so sir can you please tell which part to attempt for uceed.As you told ceed part-A should be solved for uceed but in the papers from 2009-2016 there was nothing like part-A instead there were titles which i listed above so you please tell which part to attempt.
diff between ceed n uceed is that uceed doesn't ask for design/sketch questions juts like ceed exam has. So, whatever ques apart from sketching or design-solving or writing etc can be considered for uceed.

ReplyDeleteNo, portfolio is not required for BDes. DAT (prelims) is same for both bdes and mdes, while DAT (mains) for mdes has studio test as well as interview (where portfolio is actually required). But DAT (mains) for bdes is just sketching and some hands on work, with mostly no portfolio. You can chk pg 16-17 of this brochure

ReplyDeletePhase 2 for bdes is a hands on work, kind of studio test only, but no portfolio or interview according to the statement in the brochure. You can check the official brochure for details.

Sir,i have practiced almost all of your material and solved 7 years of ceed part a question papers.Will this be enough or i need something else to touch up my preparation?
ReplyDeletePracticing once or twice the previous papers doesn't mean that you are ready for the exam. Syllabus is vast and one need to study till the last date by going through as many topics as possible, especially updating oneself with GA/GK topics. Keep going through new topics.

Previous years papers r just a way to help u familiarize with the pattern n to tell u the time that u r consuming for answering those papers n the areas u need to improve. So solving them again n again might not help unless u study topics separately.

1. Terms related to the design fields in NID like weaving, animation etc,
2. GK on day-to-day used products
3. GK on famous personalities, sports men, books, authors, epics,
4. Abbreviations - full forms of indexes
5. current affairs - V.imp
6. Patterns, Paper cuts,
7. Any GK related to NID, NID publications, faculty awards etc
8. Knowledge on Color
9. English comprehension -meaning deduction from para's, sentences,

You better skip them and concentrate on the syllabus listed i nthe brochure. After all the practice n if u find time, u can consider checking them. Although they didn't mention in syllabus as such, but such ques did appeared in sample paper (last yr paper)!

DeleteSir, I have practiced the mistakes that I made in UCEED and CEED papers but sir even after thinking for a long period of time and knowing the correct option as well, There are few questions I'm unable to solve..... Like the series type question of UCEED 2016 question no. 3.... So is there any thread solely for doubts where U and others can help each other.It will ultimately help everyone...
ReplyDeleteseries kind of ques or any aptitude ques comes by practice, that's Y I've been insisting everyone from the very beginning to focus more on image and apti part from the very beginning . There isn't any thread in which im involved, im not sure if there's any FB forum available for uceed discussions.

ReplyDelete180 is gud score, but u cannot decide based on solving prev papaers, it's upto u, either u can directly n write for 3 hrs without any prep or skip if u consider JEE adv as very imp

Sir what will be the 2nd phase of NID DAT? Is portfolio necessary for NID DAT? I don't have anything for my portfolio cause most of my drawings are digital and they are based around my personal life like friends, trips, etc So they won't get the vibes around the drawing. And if I want to opt for Film and Video communications then there is no possible reason for being good in drawing aesthetics. :(

DeleteSir one of my friend is also giving the uceed exam and he is too creative but he is color blind in differntiating the shades of green and red and some more but not fully.

Ya, it might be a problem being color blinded, as a designer one should differentiate and play with colors, so according to me, its not advisable. But as a try, ask him to write to uceed email or call to uceed helpline and check if he is allowed to take part. If they say it's ok, then just let him go ahead :)

ReplyDeleteSir I have a bit doubt in my attemption of today's paper as I haven't selected "save and next" for any question but I gaved answer and selected "review for later" for each of my answer and according to me it was mentioned in the details of paper that those questions will be evaluated...
